How the “what does my dog think of me” quiz works
Most dog quizzes ask you to pick your dog’s zodiac sign or favorite color. This one asks about the things your dog actually does. What happens when you walk through the door? What is their very specific, slightly ridiculous habit? What turns them into a furry firework? Which small moment would you never trade?
Those answers are the only material we use. From them, the quiz picks the role that seems closest to how your dog treats you, then explains it using your own details — so a dog who waits at the window, carries a sock from room to room and loses their mind at the word “car” gets a very different result from a calm senior who follows you quietly from the kitchen to the couch.
- Tell us your dog’s name (and, if you like, their age and whether to say he, she or they).
- Describe the homecoming — the most emotionally loaded minute of a dog’s day.
- Share one funny or weird habit. This is where the result gets specific.
- Pick what gets them ridiculously excited.
- Choose a memory you never want to forget. Even a small one counts.
- Guess what they would thank you for. Most people find this one surprisingly moving.
Your answers stay in your browser while you take the quiz. We don’t ask for an email to show your result, and nothing is published anywhere.
The eight results: what your dog might think you are
Every result is written around your dog, but it starts from one of eight everyday roles. None of them is better than another — they are simply different ways a dog builds their day around a person.
The Safe Place
You are the person who makes the world feel normal again — the lap after a thunderstorm, the voice after a loud visitor.
The Favorite Human
Your footsteps get the biggest reaction in the house, and your spot on the couch is somehow always occupied when you get back.
The Adventure Partner
Car keys, trail shoes, the word “ready?” — you are the co-pilot for every new smell worth investigating.
The Home Base
They check in with you again and again: a glance across the park, a quick nose-bump, then off again.
The Playmate
You are the source of games, zoomies and the ridiculous joy of the squeaky toy that should have been retired years ago.
The Comfort Person
When life gets loud, they lean on you — literally, with their whole body.
The Everyday Hero
You keep every ritual on track: breakfast, the evening walk, the exact treat at the exact time.
The Best Friend
No single reason. Simply, completely, their person.
If you want to go deeper into the roles themselves, our magazine has a longer piece on the roles owners play in a dog’s life, and another on what your dog may really think of you, including what researchers can and cannot say.
An example result
Here is what a result looks like for Charlie, a fictional example dog who runs to the door, carries one blue sock everywhere, adores car rides and once tried to eat an entire snowfall.
Charlie sees you as…
His Safe Place 🐾
From what you told us, Charlie seems to treat your presence as part of what makes the world feel normal. The way he waits by the door and insists on carrying that blue sock from room to room suggests that home isn’t really a place to him — it’s wherever you are.
Fictional example.
What a dog quiz can — and can’t — tell you
Dogs communicate constantly through routine, body language and sound. Researchers have learned a lot about how dogs communicate, but nobody can translate a dog’s thoughts word for word. So this quiz doesn’t pretend to read your dog’s mind. It reflects back the things you already notice, and gives them a name.
That is also why the result uses honest framing like “from what you told us” and “it sounds like”. The details are real; the interpretation is playful. If something about your dog’s behavior worries you — sudden changes, fear, aggression, pain — the right next step is your veterinarian, not a quiz.
After the quiz: the letter your dog would write
Right after your result, you’ll see the first lines of a letter written in your dog’s voice, built from your answers. If you love it, you can unlock the full personalized letter from your dog for $7 — a keepsake with a printable PDF, a phone wallpaper and a share card. If not, your free result is still yours to keep and share. Curious what a full letter reads like? Browse our collection of example letters from dogs.
